| Re: Chittagong The Ship-Breaking Yards This was recently featured in 60 minutes. Like dream said, it is a toxic dump for the rest of the world threatening wild life and the ecological balance in the area. This business started when the big cyclone of 1965 landed a ship on the beach and local businessman figured out a way to recycle the steel. Now it is a death trap with about 50 laborers dying every year from accidents. This is where we actually get most of our steel (85%) used to build houses. What a shame, we don't have to trade our future for steel just to make few local businessman/politicians rich. Thanks Aaron for those stunning photographs. |
