Ajoy Chakrabarty is a versatile musical genius and is one of the most competent vocalists today. He was the first recipient of the Kumar Gandharva Award for the ' Best Musician OF India under 45 '. The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2000 was conferred upon him for his outstanding contribution to Hindustani Classical Music.

He has been associated with SRA right from its inception. He started off as the first Scholar of the Academy. Later on, he became a Guru of the Patiala Gharana. He is one of the Members of the Expert Committee of the Academy.

He was initiated into music by his father, Shri Ajit Chakrabarty, and nurtured by illustrious musicians like Shri Kanai Das Bairagi, Guru Jnan Prakash Ghosh and Ustad Munawar Ali Khan.

His dedication to music inspires him to cultivate and compose all kinds of music and he became the first North Indian vocalist to receive the Sangeet Natak Academy (1999-2000) at the age of 47.
