This is a repost. Rihaad had uploaded this film in May 2006. However, that torrent has not been active for a very long time and this upload is of much higher quality, being a true DVD rip. Plot Outline: Shyamalendu (Barun Chanda) is a successful executive at a fan company. His life revolves around his work and socialising with colleagues along with his wife, Dolan (Paromita Chaudhuri). His sister-in-law, Tutul (Sharmila Tagore) comes to stay with them for a few days. She is given a tour of the life they lead - in restaurants, beauty parlours, clubs and race courses. But then crisis strikes when, just before the shipment of a prestigious export order, the goods are found to be faulty. With the help of his Personnel Officer, Shyamalendu averts the crisis by engineering a strike and a lockout. For his 'efficient' handling of the crisis, Shyamalendu is promoted and there is congratulations all around - except from Tutul.
Comments: Satyajit Ray was probably at his creative best in the period between 1971 (Seemabaddha) and 1977 (Shatranj Ke Khilari). This was when he created some of his greatest films like the Kolkata Trilogy (Seemabaddha, Pratwidwandi and Jana Aranya), His only Hindi feature film (Shatranj Ke Khilari) and his wonderful documentaries (Inner Eye, Bala and Sikkim). I'm probably committing blasphemy in the eyes of the Bengali, but in my opinion, after Jana Aranya (1977), Satyajit never again made a film which matched his reputation. (Not for mature audiences anyway, although he did make some delightful films for children).
Made at the start of this creative period, Seemabaddha is based on a novel by Shankar but transcends the novel. This is the first of his films where Ray is not just a story teller but also a commentator on contemporary society. Seemabaddha tells a story of a rising young executive and his ethical dilemma. Ray sees the world of Shyamalendu Chatterjee with a bit of awe, a sense of distance, some sympathy but never does he convey approval. On one plane the eyes of Tutul are the eyes of Satyajit Ray, yet Ray's Shyamalendu is not just an individual. He represents the world around him.
To me Seemabaddha also reflects a transition in contemporary Indian society. This is the aftermath of the liberation of Bangladesh, the gradual decline in public ethical standards, growth of corruption and the ascendancy of expediency over idealism. In a way Satyajit was foretelling the evolution of Indian society.
