Byomkesh Bakshi - Simanta Heera - 2008 - 1550 MB
(Based on the stories by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay)

Arthamanartham (uploaded earlier)
Simonto Heera
Makorshar Ras (to be uploaded)

Second of three Episodes. Please see Uploader's Notes below

Synopsis:
Kumar Tridibendra Narayan Ray, scion of an illustrious Zamindar family of North Bengal, has lost a magnificent diamond, which is also a family heirloom. He knows who the thief is -his uncle, Sir Digindra Narayan Ray - sculptor, scientist, and genius extraordinaire. Simonto Heera is the story of how Byomkesh gets the the diamond back from Sir Digindra.

Comments:
Once again a reasonably faithful adaptation of the short story by Saradindu Bandyopadhyay. A little greater attention to detail - but not much. The screenplay was more taut in Arthamanartham. It drags in parts here. There are innumerable very stupid mistakes that mar the movie. Just three examples will perhaps be sufficient to illustrate this point. First, the story is set in pre-independence times, yet one of the pictures in the background is of Udaipur Phosphates Ltd. taken in 1956! Second, The Zamindar's car is a Landmaster, which is really the Morris Oxford II and debuted in England in 1952. It was introduced in India in 1954. Third, the chequebooks as well as the currency is of the size of a modern one. Pre-independence chequebooks and currency notes were far larger. The matchbox I referrred to in Arthamanartham keeps appearing in this episode too - with greater frequency. At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if Trinamool congress posters dotted the landscape (They don't Thank Goodness!)

The evidence of cutting corners is more replete here. Byomkesh goes to the "Imperial Library" which looks more like my down-at-heel uncle's drawing room. Was it so difficult to shoot in the National Library? They use the same lace table cloth everywhere - in Byomkesh as well as Sir Digindra's rooms! Sir Digindra's total statue collection is three - they make an appearance in every room! Even the flower vase with the same artificial flowers makes it appearance in several rooms and different days. Very very amateurish research and artwork!

Just in passing, Byomkesh obviously does not store drinking water at home. Puntiram has to go out of the main door of the house to fetch water for a guest - from the Calcutta Corporation faucet presumably! And the postman keeps coming to different doors in the house.

Acting is mediocre. Sudip Mukherjee's Byomkesh is somewhat less natural than in Arthananartham. I thought Utpal Dutt was far more impressive as Sir Digindra than the actor who plays the role here.

Maybe I'm too critical. After all this is Byomkesh Bakshi in Bengali.

Uploader's Notes:
Although the size of this upload is a bit non-standard (1.51 GB in place of 1.36), its because this is a longer film and also because I have calibrated the sizes of the three episodes so that they can be burned on one DVD5 disc.
