Tech Specifications:
Synopsis: In 1969, a French cine team, led by the famed director Louis Malle, went around the streets of Calcutta, filming what they saw. The result is a kaleidoscope of images that vividly bring out the misery of Calcutta's poor and the vibrancy of life in the city.
Comments: This is the famous documentary by Louis Malle. When it was first screened it caused a storm of protest in India. Malle was accused of making commercial use of poverty, of painting a distorted picture of the City of Joy and if I remember rightly, the documentary was banned for a while in India. It was also the documentary which first showed to the world the kind of work Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity were doing and was responsible for much of the initial fame that she achieved.
Visually this film is stunning. It is an unparalleled picturisation of human misery and also the chaotic vibrancy of a great city. There is nothing sanitised about this film - it hits you in the guts. Some of the images, like those of the poor surviving on pitiful morsels of food or those in the leper colony will haunt you for ages afterwards. It was the ghastly drama of these pictures that made this film into one of the greatest human documents of all time.
This film was nominated for the Golden Palm in the Cannes Film Festival and was selected for the Grand Prix at the Montreal Film Festival in 1970.
Watch this film to get a glimpse of the other India. The part that has been left out of the 8% growth story. Make no mistake, it still exists. Calcutta 1969 could well be Kolkata 2008 as well.
Downloading this totally spoilt my ratio i must say i mean nobody is downloading this file lol
That has been my grouse about this site for quite some time. There are few takers for serious cinema. There are even less takers for documentaries. :-)

This looks like it could be very interesting, but I was wondering if you had Louis Malle's epic "Phantom India"? I have been trying to locate this filn for many years, so any help would be gratefully received.

Yes I have all 7 parts and in DVD quality. I will release it, part by part, if and when the Admins allow releases under the DDR banner.
