Tech Specifications: Comments: Over the course of a nearly forty-year career, Louis Malle forged a reputation as one of the world?s most versatile filmmakers. At the same time, however, with less fanfare, Malle was creating a parallel, even more personal body of work as a documentary filmmaker. With the discerning eye of a true artist and the investigatory skills of a great journalist, Malle takes us to the expanse of India in his astonishing epic Phantom India. Louis Malle's 378-minute documentary provides an epic-length portrait of life in India circa 1968. It was made at a time of intense personal crisis for the director: 34-year-old Malle, was in a state of depression that drove him to the brink of suicide. With his marriage to Anne-Marie Deschodt in pieces, Malle decided to wipe the slate completely clean: he dropped out of western society and headed to India, with a two-man crew (sound recordist Jean-Claude Laureux and co-cinematographer Etienne Becker), traveling without maps and without a compass - destination and whereabouts unknown. The three shot documentary footage instinctively, flipping on their cameras each time something caught their attention. The journey itself lasted a little under four months, from January 5, 1968 through May 1, 1968; it generated over 30 hours of footage, which Malle and editor Suzanne Baron subdivided thematically and edited into seven segments of about 54 minutes each. These are some of the most engaging and fascinating non-fiction films ever made. It is widely regarded as the crowning achievement of Louis Malle's career. Malle himself called it the most personal of all his films. Be aware that some episodes may be opressive and some controversial. Not every assessment he makes of the country is positive. Malle sees India as a land of contradictions, where every story has two or even three sides, and he tries to find a way to see them all. Then again, maybe that's not a contradiction at all. Maybe that's just the human spirit at work. After all every single Louis Malle's documentaries searched for this humn spirit, regardless of geography. When this series was first broadcast on BBC TV, the then Government of India was outraged. They demanded that the episodes be taken off air by BBC. When that didn't happen the Government banned BBC for a while from India. Synopsis: Episode 2, "Things Seen in Madras" As its title suggests, this episode compiles much of the footage shot by Malle and his crew during their time in Madras. It opens with a temple celebration at Kapaleshvara, then explores the political climate of Madras, with a glimpse of a satire performed on the stage. Later, Malle and co. visit the Family Planning Ward at the Madras fair (where tour guides offer humorous illustrations of birth control procedures). The episode wraps with a trip to a movie studio, with a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the production of the movie Thillana Mohanambal. Uploader's Notes: Not my rip. Full credit to the original ripper.
