Avro Keyboard: Complete Solution for Bangla Typing

Bangla Computing, the present: It has been a long time since we use Bangla in computers. Primitive ASCII technology evolutes to modern Unicode and makes us relieved from obstacles. New researches and inventions are taking place throughout the world to find even better solutions. Now a days Bangla computing doesn’t mean only Bangla typing, composing or printing; along with these we got full Bangla Language support in modern operating systems, creating full Bangla interface is now possible for software development, full searchable and sort able Bangla database systems are no more a dream and at the end user level we can make proper use of Bangla even in file/folder names, email, web sites or even in instant messaging. উইন্ডোজ অপারেটিং সিস্টেমে শতভাগ ইউনিকোড ভিত্তিক বাংলা লেখার সুবিধা নিয়ে বিশ্বে সর্বপ্রথম যে কীবোর্ড ইন্টারফেসটি তৈরী হয় সেটি অভ্র কীবোর্ড। ২০০৩ সালের ২৬ মার্চ এটির প্রথম ভার্সন প্রকাশ পায়। এরপর গত তিন বছরের অগ্রযাত্রায় একে একে নয়টি উন্নততরঃ রিলিজের পর এই ২০০৬ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারীতে এটি অভ্র কীবোর্ড ৩.০.০ হিসেবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে, যেটি সর্বশেষ ইউনিকোড স্ট্যান্ডার্ড ৪.১ অনুসরণ করে তৈরী হয়েছে।
পূর্ণাঙ্গ একটি বাংলা সফটওয়্যার বলতে যা বোঝায় অভ্র কীবোর্ড তাই। কম্পিউটারে বাংলা ইনপুটের এখন পর্যন্ত যতগুলো পদ্ধতি আবিষ্কৃত হয়েছে অভ্র কীবোর্ড তার প্রতিটি পদ্ধতিতেই বাংলা লিখতে পারে। এর সঙ্গে রয়েছে সর্বাধুনিক ইংরেজী থেকে বাংলা লেখার ফনেটিক বর্ণান্তর (transliteration) পদ্ধতি, যেখানে ব্যবহারকারী ইংরেজীতে “amar bangladesh” লিখে বাংলায় সরাসরি “আমার বাংলাদেশ” লেখার সুবিধা পাবেন। আরো আছে সনাতন কীবোর্ড লেআউট পদ্ধতিতে বাংলা লেখার সুযোগ। নতুন ভার্সনে ব্যবহারকারীরা “অভ্র ইজি”, “বর্ণনা”, “জাতীয়” (বাংলাদেশ কম্পিউটার কাউন্সিল প্রণীত) এবং “ইউনিবিজয়” (বিজয় কীবোর্ড লেআউটের সামান্য পরিবর্তিত সংস্করণ যা কপিরাইট আইন লঙ্ঘন না করে তৈরী করা) কীবোর্ড লেআউট ব্যবহার করে বাংলা লিখতে পারবেন। এছাড়া একদম নতুন ব্যবহারকারীদের জন্য এতে মাউস দিয়ে বাংলা লেখারও একটি স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ ব্যবস্থা রয়েছে।

বাংলা ভাষায় বাংলা লেখা! :
উইন্ডোজ এক্সপি (সার্ভিস প্যাক ২) তে “ইনপুট ল্যাঙ্গুয়েজ” হিসেবে বাংলা ব্যবহার করা যায়, তবে তা “ভারতীয় বাংলা”। অভ্র কীবোর্ড এর ডেভেলপাররা বসে থাকেননি, উইন্ডোজ এ সাপোর্ট না থাকলেও অভ্র কীবোর্ড দিয়ে বাংলা লেখার সময় আপনি “বাংলাদেশী বাংলা” ভাষা “ইনপুট ল্যাঙ্গুয়েজ” হিসেবে ব্যবহার করতে পারবেন।

অন্যান্য সুবিধাঃ
অভ্র কীবোর্ডে কাজ করতে করতে যেকোন সময় কীবোর্ড লেআউট দেখার একটি সুবিধা রয়েছে, নতুন ব্যবহারকারীদের জন্য যা অত্যন্ত সুবিধাজনক। বাংলা লেখা এবং প্রয়োগের পূর্ণাঙ্গ নির্দেশিকা বাংলায় ভাষায় লিখে ব্যবহারকারীদের জন্য সফটওয়্যারটিতে দেয়া আছে।

প্রয়োগঃ
অভ্র কীবোর্ড একটি সিস্টেম লেভেল কীবোর্ড ইন্টারফেস হিসেবে কাজ করে। ইউনিকোড সাপোর্ট করে এমন যেকোন সফটওয়্যারে আপনি অভ্র কীবোর্ড ব্যবহার করতে পারবেন। অর্থাৎ অভ্র কীবোর্ড দিয়ে অফিস ডকুমেন্ট তৈরী থেকে শুরু করে বাংলা ইমেইল, ইউনিকোড ভিত্তিক বাংলা ওয়েবসাইট ইত্যাদি সবই করা সম্ভব।

সাফল্যঃ

ফ্রি ডাউনলোডঃ
অভ্র কীবোর্ড এর সবচেয়ে বড় সুবিধা হল ব্যক্তিগত বা বাণিজ্যিক যেকোন কাজের জন্য এটি সম্পূর্ণ বিনামূল্যে পাওয়া যায়। এটির কোন কমার্শিয়াল ভার্সন নেই, অর্থাৎ সমস্ত সুবিধাই একসাথে আপনি ফ্রি অভ্র কীবোর্ড এ পাবেন এবং নির্দ্বিধায় এটি বিতরণ করতে পারবেন। নিচের ওয়েবসাইট থেকে অভ্র কীবোর্ড ডাউনলোড করা যাবে-

Thank you OmicronLab, for your informative post. I have to admit, being brought up in the west, my Bangla is not so good and there are many like me who have not studied Bangla beyond primary level.

The explosion of telephone/e-mail/internet means I rarely use written Bangla anymore. One of the barriers has been the interface to writing in Bangla.

Before the advent of Unicode, there had been so many different methods and the lack of interoperability was a major factor in staying away from it! Even with the standardisation that came with Unicode, I've still not taken it on board but will certainly try out the Avro Keyboard method.

However, the next obstacle is likely to be speed. I can touch-type English at around 30-40 wpm. If I want to write in Bangla, that will come down to, maybe, around 5-10 wpm with a higher error ratio. Please focus some of your research on this area which will allow you to capture a greater number of users.

Another problem I find is spelling!! Because I haven't studied Bangla, I can never get the spellings right. When should I use a jonthosh-sha instead of talibosh-sha (for example). An integrated spell checker into the keyboard would provide a much needed feature across all applications that the keyboard can be used on rather than relying on the applications have a spell checker.

Another issue is it's support is limited to IExplorer. It is evident that now a days FireFox or Opera is becoming increasingly popular. Besides firefox also maintains the strict web content standard. If OmicronLab really want to promote 'Bangla' as a language I believe it should extend its' support to the free platforms.

Unicode Bangla is platform independent, operating system independent. It works in Linux, Windows, IE, FireFox, Microsoft Office Apps, OpenOffice Apps; anything and everything that supports Unicode standard.

There is no reason for not using Bangla in forum. We have implemented complete Bangla support in our BanglaCricket Forums since last month.

Avro is excellent software for unicode Bangla interface. Even though there are other unicode Bangla solutions, such as Ekushey and Microsoft IME; I think Avro is the best with its UniBijoy and phonetic typing support.

If we do not use unicode Bangla and keep living in the Banglish world then it will be to our own detriment.

Avro Keyboard supports Phonetic typing, extramly useful for those who are adopted in English keyboard layout. For example, if you type "ami banglay gan gai", Avro Keyboard is intelligent enough to convert that to Bangla. The benefit is, you are not loosing typing speed at all by trying to use a new Bangla keyboard layout.

What a co-insidence! Recently we have taken a Bangla dictionary project and I hope withe the next release of Avro Keyboard, you will get a free Bangla spell checker!

Lastly, thanks goes to bdkid39, I was hesitating to be as bold like you brother (some people may misunderstand that approach). আসুন বাংলায় লিখি, বাংলিশে না!

can you release your Avro Bangla Keyboard here in the All Other section? please make a torrent file of the executable file and post it here. please dont forget to post some screenshots! we appreciate your efforts!

Another option would ne Shabdik. Specially when they are completely FREE now (used to sell at 10 USD and I bought it long time back). They have superb dictionary support. Avro next 2nd best to Shabdik to me. However, choice of bengla software varies from person to person.
