Here is something I came across as i was surfing:
Tyneside film-maker Lalon Amin is undertaking one of the most exciting projects in the North East’s Asian history.
Lalon and his South Shields based production company Bangla Dreams aim to document the migration and settlement of the region's Bangladeshi community, in a unique documentary project.
The personal experiences of the first wave of Bangladeshi settlers in the region, tell of adventure and courage, aspirations, sacrifice and passion for a new life which would involve both dreams and fears.
According to David Milliband, MP for South Shields, “The (South Shields’) Bangladeshi community, now into its third generation, is ready to challenge Birmingham as the curry capital of Britain.”
Curries aside, Lalon’s documentary would like to draw attention to the lack of information about South Shields’ Bangladeshi community.
To collate a comprehensive account of all things Bengali in Shields, Lalon intends to interview as many people as possible, asking some obvious and not so obvious questions, piecing his findings together to create moving pictures with a unique Anglo-Bengali narrative.
Why did Bangladeshi’s first came to South Shields, and where exactly did they come from? Not everyone came direct from South East Asia.
Bengali family names and occupations can , for example, tell a lot about our origins and migration patterns. Are the Shield's Bengali community settled in the region or are younger Bengalis moving on, maybe even abroad? Do second and third generation Bengali’s consider themselves Bengali or British first?
Lalon and the Roots Project would like people of Bengali origin, of all ages, to get behind this very important project and help put local Bengali culture on the map.
We'd also like you to share your photos, cine, video or super 8 film footage, of everyday Bengali family life, holidays and celebrations
The finished documentary will be premiered on Bangla TV. Audio clips and your images will also be published on Roots @ BBC Tyne.
