Thank You takaikundu For The Useful Support. The Appeal Is Quoted Below.

Urgent appeal from AID

URGENT APPEAL FOR MILLIONS AFFECTED BY CYCLONE AILA

Please contribute generously through AID's All India Relief Fund.

As of Friday, 29th May 2009, more than 100 people are reported dead and an estimated 3 million displaced from their homes by Cyclone Aila in southern West Bengal.

In the Sundarban area, thousands of homes have been broken and people have taken shelter in nearby schools and Panchayat offices. There is an acute shortage of food, drinking water and clothes. As the water is receding in some villages gastroentrities is beginning to rear its ugly head.

Association for India's Development (AID) is working with Baikanthapur Tarun Sangha (BTS)and Mukti in the blocks of Kultali, Patharpratima, Gosaba, Kakdwip and Mathurapur II in the district of South 24 Parganas, to provide immediate relief and long term rehabilitation.

The need is immediate and huge. Rupees 10 Lakhs (approx $21000) has already been sent to provide food, water and temporary shelter to the affected.

Regular updates from the ground are being posted on Aila Relief Page of AID's website

AID is a volunteer movement, and a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization (tax ID 04-365260). Donations to AID are tax-deductible in the USA.

West Bengal Cyclone death toll mounts to 82
27 May 2009, The Hindu

KOLKATA: The city and some districts, devastated by cyclone Aila on Monday, are yet to come to terms with the reality, even as the death toll shot up to 82. Fresh areas in the north were reeling under the impact of the cyclone’s after-effects on Tuesday. More than 2.2 million people have been affected.

Flood of woes: Marooned villagers at Basanti in West Bengal’s
South 24 Parganas district move to safer places on Tuesday.

Heavy and incessant rain in Darjeeling triggered landslips, which claimed nine lives. At least six people are reported missing. The highway connecting the hills to the rest of the State was blocked at several places.

“Cyclone Aila has weakened into a depression,” said G.C. Debnath, director, weather section, Regional Meteorological Centre. “It caused very heavy rainfall in north Bengal on Tuesday.”

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the situation.

Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who is in Darjeeling, was in constant touch with Mr. Bhattacharjee. He visited three areas worst hit by the landslips and met the injured who were admitted to the district hospital. He appreciated the locals for their help in clearing the roads of debris.

While Kolkata limped back to normal, vast areas of the districts hit by the cyclonic storm on Monday were under water that gushed in through breaches in the embankments.

Army and Border Security Force personnel are assisting in rescue operations in Darjeeling and North and South 24 Parganas districts. Two MI-17 helicopters of the Air Force are airdropping relief materials and carrying out evacuations in inaccessible areas in South and North 24 Parganas.

More than 41,000 people, who have lost their homes, have been put up in 109 relief camps. Around 61,000 houses have been destroyed and 1.32 lakh partially damaged, Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty said here.

Certain areas, including Patharpratima in South 24 Parganas district, remain inaccessible.

The Chief Minister visited some of the worst-hit areas in the district. So did Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee later in the afternoon.

Mr. Bhattacharjee spoke to a section of those sheltered in the relief camps in the Nimpith area. Rescue and relief operations were being undertaken on a war-footing, he said. Attempts were being made to restore power and drinking water was also being supplied in pouches.

Ms. Banerjee suggested that a master plan be drawn up for flood and erosion control. She criticised the State government for not opening adequate relief camps.

Kolkata, much to the relief of its residents, woke up to clear skies in the morning. Though traffic was back on the roads, several stretches continue to remain blocked by uprooted trees.

63 dead in Bangladesh

Haroon Habib reports from Dhaka:

Cyclone Aila, which crossed over to Bangladesh, claimed more than 60 lives there, with more than a 100 missing as on Tuesday.

The cyclone wreaked havoc in Satkhira, a south-west district adjoining West Bengal, leaving 20 dead, said a senior official at the district control room. Packing winds of up to 110 kmph, the storm made landfall between midday and late night on Monday.

Thousands were shifted to emergency shelters along the south-west coastline. Tidal surges damaged nearly a dozen flood-control structures, marooning thousands.

Reports said many smaller islands such as Dhalchar, Char Kukrimukri, Char Patila, Char Hasina, Char Nizam and Char Kashpia in the Bay of Bengal were under 8 to 10 feet of water.

I feel so low at not being able to do anything, but at the same time, take heart from the fact that people are doing so much...

Zakat Foundation Pledges $50,000 in Immediate Relief for Victims of Cyclone Aila

More than 1 Million Devastated in Bangladesh and Eastern India

Zakat Foundation has pledged $50,000 in immediate Emergency Relief to the victims of Cyclone Aila. The coasts of Bangladesh and eastern India were devastated as Cyclone Aila ripped through the areas on May 25, 2009. Over 200 people have been killed and more than 1 million left homeless as heavy winds and floods destroyed homes, uprooted trees and scattered debris along roads. News agencies report that those who survived the storm are in desperate need of food, clean drinking water and shelter.

From our regional office in Bangladesh, Zakat Foundation promptly arrived at some of the most severely affected disaster areas to distribute food packages, hygiene packages and medicine. Zakat Foundation will continue to provide these basic necessities and calls upon our generous donors and supporters to help provide for the victims of this disaster.

How Can You Help?

* For $100, you can provide 5 families with food packages.
* For $50, you can provide 10 families with hygiene and medicine packages.

Cyclone Aila is the most recent of a series of tropical storms that have devastated the coast of Bangladesh and surrounding areas were villages and towns have struggled to rebuild.

Music For Relief
We are partnering with non-profit organization Music for Relief to support the people in South Asia displaced by Cyclone Aila.
MFR is responding to help provide relief following Cyclone Aila. The Cyclone struck eastern India and coastal Bangladesh one week ago on Monday 5/25 leaving millions of people displaced and in desperate need of food, water and shelter. In West Bengal at least 5.1 million people were displaced, with more than one million people stranded in the Sundarban islands alone, most of them without any food or water. Food security and loss of livelihood are also major concerns as it is estimated that 80,000 acres of rice paddy and other crops have been destroyed, about 250,000 acres partially destroyed and over 50,000 poultry and livestock have been killed.

Please help the victims of this disaster by making a donation: Music for Relief

And forward this information to spread the word.

MFR is partnering with BRAC in Bangladesh where 100% of funds contributed will go to those affected by Cyclone Aila.
More information about BRAC:BRAC has provided emergency aid and rehabilitation in Bangladesh since its inception and carried out large-scale relief and rehabilitation activities there for cyclone and flood victims in 1987, 1988, 1991, 1998, 2000, 2004 and 2007. BRAC, the largest non-profit in the developing world, was launched in Bangladesh in 1972 and today reaches more than 110 million people in Africa and Asia with its holistic approach to addressing poverty by providing micro-loans, self-employment opportunities, health services, education and legal and human rights education. Covenant Relief Fund Created to Help Cyclone Aila Victims

BANGLADESH (June 2, 2009) – Covenant World Relief (CWR) is partnering with two international relief agencies to provide assistance to an estimated 500,000 people left homeless in the wake of Cyclone Aila that devastated areas of both Bangladesh and Eastern India last week.

A special Cyclone Aila Relief Fund has been established by CWR to receive donations from those interested in assisting in the relief and recovery efforts, notes David Husby, CWR director. The storm killed more than 200 people, with local authorities fearing the death toll will climb even higher.

Kids“Bangladesh is susceptible to very destructive cyclones,” says Husby, who is personally familiar with the hardest-hit areas. “Because the country is largely a delta, there is very little high ground for people to escape the terrible flooding that comes with the cyclones. During the monsoon seasons most of the country is covered in water. It is the poor who suffer the most from the flooding.”

The storm flattened the mud houses, uprooted trees, and forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people. "The situation is very grave - countless families have been displaced, especially in the Sundarbans," says Kanti Ganguly, state minister for the Sundarbans, in a Reuters news agency report.

“The damages of this cyclone cannot compare with any other previous cyclone,” reports one observer, Milton Bhai, who weathered the storm and has been providing updates to Husby. “Its effects are all over the country. Even till last night we could not reach the remote areas, because road has been washed out, bridges been washed out, embankments broken in many places.

“There is no food, no water,” Bhai continues. “In adjoining 16 districts of the coastal area, people have lost everything. Seawater still coming in through the broken embankments. No fresh water sources left undamaged. People have just finished the harvest of last rice crop. They lost everything. Livestock’s just vanished.”

FloodingHe concludes his update with a plea for assistance. “I am trying to organize a relief program, collecting gifts from believers to help the affected believers. I don’t know how much we can do. Our supervisors are organizing this effort. I know whatever we collect that will be very little.

“I am asking for your help. A good relief program will help us in many ways. Please pray for us and try to help us. The situation I am seeing here is hopeless. The damages are so big, we could not do much. Our people are poor and every one has needs.”

Bangladesh is one of those places that seems so far away to many in the West, Husby observes, which presents a challenge in trying to encourage financial support for relief and reconstruction efforts. “The majority of the people are among the poorest of the poor.”

Donations should be designated for Cyclone Aila Relief and directed to Covenant World Relief, 5101 N. Francisco Avenue, Chicago, Il, 60625. All gifts will be acknowledged for income tax purposes.

Editor’s note: the accompanying graphic images were provided by Milton Bhai, taken from newspaper reports. The children in the top photo are waiting for the arrival of emergency food supplies - they had not eaten since the onslaught of the storm.
