Hi Its a great news for all of us. Bangladeshi Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway, today for their work in advancing economic and social opportunities.
“Economic growth and political democracy can not achieve their full potential unless the female half of humanity participates on an equal footing with the male,” the committee said.
I think we all should congratulate him and learn the lesson that a single individual sometime can make a big difference.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006, divided into two equal parts, to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. Lasting peace can not be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty. Micro-credit is one such means. Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights.
Congratulations to Dr Yunus, the great son of Bangladesh. If there was a person that deserved recognition its him.
Not only is it a great honour for him personally but also for entire Bangladesh because he is the first BANGLADESHI to win the Noble Peace Prize. Millions of our people benefitted from his mirco-credit program. :)
I heard firs this great news from a friend who was observing the nobel prize declaration live. I was then in the school and busy, thus couldnt make any post. It is not only a great and heart-breaking new for us it is the acceptance of our hardwork in the outsideworld. The Grameen Bank was alredy well known in Sweden as the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) was giving their cooperation and support for the micro-credit prokects.
I am personally feeling very lucky as I interviewed him for my thesis fieldwork. Another reason is he is very bossom friend of one of Bangladeshi-Swedish professor in Lund, Dr Ali Khan. Both of them were class-freinds in Chittagong. When Dr. Mohammad Yunus been in Sweden we all celebrated another prize with him.
Live long Dr Yunus and live long Bangladesh!!!!!:flamethro

We believe that poverty does not belong to a civilized human society. It belongs to museums.
I think we should also give credit to 20,000 workers of Grameen bank and those hundreds of thousands family who borrowed money from Grameen bank.. As the prize is equally divided to Doc Younus and Grameen bank..
The Nobel price was long overdue. Clinton (A close friend of Dr. Yunus) lobbied for him back in the 90s, but he did not get it. I thought they would honor him for the field of economics, but this is also a tremendous honor. He did not invent any revolutionary theorem, but he broke the most cruel and unjust myth of poor being not credit worthy. Not just that poor (I mean dearth poor) are more likely to return borrowed money, but that's where real economic progress takes hold. I say kudos to dr. Yunus and shame to all those fat pigs that sit on the bank boards and default millions.

Hahahaa.. Pandit I cannot stop laughing! I wish all those millionaires could listen what u just said!!!!!! Some of them will show up on the media & will deliver little speech on the Nobel win. I have already seen some of the nastiest corrupted wealthy criminals of BD on todays TV news.
Anyway, yes it was long overdue but finally he made it. And in his lifetime he made it :-) I believe Peace prize is the most prestgious amongst Nobel prizes. Here u do not write a book or invent something, what you do is avery significant job for the entire human nation. This is HUGE!
This is truly an amazing accomplishment and a long deserved honor. There are a few quotes from the story in the New York times that truly sets the stage for this prize.
''Every single individual on earth has both the potential and the right to live a decent life. Across cultures and civilizations, Yunus and Grameen Bank have shown that even the poorest of the poor can work to bring about their own development.
The right to live a decent life is a God given right! Nonetheless most need the helping hand of other successful men in order to move up the ladder of success. But if we become selfish enough to let the poor get poorer and the rich get richer than our culture will never develop. Bangladesh is still one of the poorest countries in the world, but with more and more people like Dr. Yunus we give the poor hope and a chance.
“our grandchildren will go to museums to see what poverty was like.”
I find this quote extremely powerful and touching. I'm sure as bengalis we all imagine a day when poverty stricken Bangladesh will flourish with educated men and women, lavish businesses, and a cleaner enviroment. One day.....
On paper I am not a citizen of bangladesh, but my heart mind was greatly overjoyed with this achievement of Dr Yunus. Our man has done it. Great work. Hope we see more bengalis on the podium. This is fantastic news.

I was asleep, my mom's phone call from back home woke me up... she wanted to share the good news with me. Even through phone her excitement was clearly recognizable. At first, i couldn't believe my ears, "In peace you say?" i kept asking her. I knew he deserved an economy Noble prize, but in peace?
Had a very busy day today! I was out all day... class, seminar, students... but not even for a single moment Dr. Yunus left my mind. It's when i came back to my apartment i realized how happy and proud i am because of him... and millions of others like me are. What else our forsaken country could ask for?

"The 2006 NobelPeacePrize have been awarded to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank,themicrocredit- lending bank he helped establish in Dhaka, Bangladeshin1976. The Nobel committee mentions that the recipients have been awarded "for their efforts to create economic and social development from below".
Such a great honor for us..proud to be a Bangladeshi... But really wonder why Nobel Prize Committee awarded the "Peace Prize" rather than "ECONOMY". Anycomment? :bestwishe
