Tutorial: Ripping Subtitles in .srt format

HOW TO RIP SUBTITLES (.SRT FILES) FROM .VOB FILES USING SUBRIP

I'm assuming that you're already capable of ripping XviD/ DivX-AC3.avi files from a DVD using DVD Dycrypter, which comes with Gordian Knot 0.35.0.

Whether the DVD has any subs or not can be checked from a .txt file that is generated by DVD Dycrypter when those VOB files were ripped from a DVD. Open the text files (eg. VTS_02 - Stream Information.txt) and you'll see something like this:

Quote:
0x20 - Subtitle - English - [SubPicture 01: Normal] / LBA: 757 / PTS: 00:00:02.560 / Delay: 2200ms
0x80 - Audio - AC3 / 2ch / 48kHz / DRC / English, English / LBA: 31 / PTS: 00:00:00.280 / Delay: -80ms
0xE0 - Video - MPEG-2 / 720x576 (PAL) / 4:3 / LBA: 1 / PTS: 00:00:00.360 / Delay: 0ms
As you can see if there is any subs available it will report that, followed by the language of the subtitle. In this case, we can see that there is English subtitle available. Now follow the steps below:

1. First, you need to download a small software called SubRip, available here. Just open the SubRip.exe file and and you're ready for it.

2. Select the VOB button.

3. Select the Open IFO button.

--> Go to folder where you have kept all VOB and IFO files. Once you're in the destination folder, you'll see something like this:

--> Now select the appropriate .IFO files and then you'll see this:

4. At this point, make sure the FPS (frame per second) of the Subtitle window (that appears below the Subrip window,) matches with the VOB's FPS. Just press Pause/Abort button to change the FPS to macth with the VOB's FPS[/b]

..... PLEASE SEE THE NEXT COMMENT FOR THE REST OF THE TUTORIAL...

Re: Tutorial: Ripping Subtitles in .srt format

5. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU TYPE ALL THE ALPHABETS EXACTLY AS THEY APPEAR. In other words make sure:

5.1 IF IT'S ITALIC = YOU TYPE ITALIC
5.2 IF IT'S NORMAL YOU TYPE IT AS NORMAL
5.3 if small fonts = you type small fonts
5.4 IF CAPITAL FONTS = YOU TYPE CAPITAL FONTS
5.5 you don't have TO worry about bold letters- type them as "normal" if they bold-normal. But if they are Bold-Italic make sure you type them as Italic.

--> This process, AFAIK, is called OCR

6. When this OCR process is done, press the 1s button that appears with a green background on the lower window. This is where you have seen the FPS button.. see beside FPS button and you'll find the 1s button

7. Now press the Correct! button. it corrects some of the common mistakes. See the image below to see what needs to be selected before you press the Correct! button

8. If you want to split the .srt file, then select Split Output File from the drop-down list of Output.

Now follow the instructions carefully and you're done :D

NOTE: IF YOU WISH TO SAVE THOSE OCR OUTPUT FILES (with .sum extension) SAVE THEM UNDER THE FOLDER ChMatrix. this folder is on the same folder where SubRip.exe. You can use them in future, for which, all you have to do is to guide SubRip to select a specific .sum file.

GOODLUCK :)

Re: Tutorial: Ripping Subtitles in .srt format

FEW IMPORTANT POINTS:

1. In some cases you'll find that the DVDDecrypter is unable to copy the VOB files. In such cases, do one of the followings:

EITHER:
a. Copy the whole DVD in .ISO format using DVDDecrypter. Please note that in this case, DVDDecrypter will not generate any .txt. file (, as mentioned before step 1 in the tutorial)
b. Then open it up using virtual CD Drive
c. you're ready now...follow Step 1- onwards :)
** You can also try by directly accessing the DVD. I haven't tried it yet. but it's worth checking

OR:
a. Select the VOB and IFO Files and copy them directly using DVDDecrypter. Please note that in this case, DVDDecrypter will not generate any .txt. file (, as mentioned before step 1 in the tutorial)
b. you're ready now...follow Step 1- onwards :)

2. Please AVOID inputting any character that is not ANSI and thus avoid saving the .srt files in ANY Standard other than ANSI. For e.g., if you see the music symbol during the OCR process replace it with a character that is ANSI, for example you can use ~ (Tilda)
