One of those distinguished artists to play an instrument of his own creation; Vishwa Mohan Bhatt has earned international acclaim for his skills on the MohanVeena.
Vishwa Mohan Bhatt was born in Rajasthan and his lineage can be traced to the most heralded names in Indian music such
as Mia Tansen and Swami Haridas. Born to parents who have a sound grounding in music, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt's father
hails from the Jaipur Gharana, while his mother trained in the Seniya Gharana. The initial years of training were
under his father. However the turning point in his career came about with his tutelage under the renowned Pandit Ravi Shankar.

It was under the tutelage of the maestro that Vishwa Mohan Bhatt sought to satisfy his quest of extracting more than
just the ordinary from the veena. Thus started the exercise of evolving an instrument that would give him the musical satisfaction he red.
The most significant contribution was made by way of inventing the Mohan Veena. This instrument is an interesting
blend of the musical attributes of the traditional veena and the Western Acoustic guitar. Its structural origins lie in the Hawaiian guitar. After years of unswerving diligence, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt was successful at creating this
instrument by adding twenty new strings to the Hawaiian guitar.
The challenge however, in doing so, lay in producing the melody of the traditional guitar without compromising on the
authenticity of the traditional Classical Indian Ragas. Thus there were obstacles not in terms of technicalities in
creating the instrument, but also retaining melodic content and the traditional nuances of the raga, in order that the
instrument would classify as a classical one. The outcome of such pioneering work was the evolution of the distinct 'gayaki ang' on the guitar.
Vishwa Mohan Bhatt has traversed the globe giving several outstanding performances on the Mohan Veena. Among his many
outstanding renditions on the Mohan Veena, the most significant is a jugalbandi with Ry Kooder, titled "A Meeting by
The River" which was a blend of Indian and Western music. This album also won this incredibly talented artist a Grammy
award. The only other Indian artist to have won this coveted accolade is his guru Pandit Ravi Shankar. Making Vishwa
Mohan Bhatt a worthy 'shishya' of the maestro.
His philosophies on music are liberal for he believes music knows no barriers. It is fluid and will in no way lose its
purity by meeting with other cultures. In fact the distinction of Indian music lies in the fact that while it lends
itself to an easy merge with the Western form, it never loses its own identity. And it is this assurance in his music
that sees Vishwa Mohan Bhatt continue to experiment with his instrument, firm in the belief that there is always scope
for improvement and embellishment.
