Ustad Amjad Ali Khan
Quote:
Amjad Ali Khan is one of the greatest exponents of the sarod. Despite being relatively young, he has been able to establish himself among the top in the musical universe. He learnt the sarod from his father Hafiz Ali Khan. He was born in 1945 .He comes from a family of muscians. His great-grand father, Gulam Ali Khan, was a court musician at Gwalior and is credited with modifying the difficult rabab into the sarod. His grandfather Nannhe Khan was also a court musician in Gwalior. Amjad Ali Khan studied under his father Hafiz Ali Khan of Gwalior. By the age of ten he was holding public performances and matured into a recognized talent by 15.Amjad Ali Khan has contributed immensly towards making the sarod popular as a solo instrument in the western world. He made many changes to the conventional style and structure of the sarod. The sarod, as gned and constructed earlier, could not convey the subtle shades of classical music. It tended to distort the tonal facets emphasising more on staccato than legato features. Nor could it produce the fast tans and gamakas. He researched these problems and made changes in the gn of the instrument and gauze of the strings used. He also introduced the gayaki in the sarod, which has added new dimensions to performances on this instrument. He plays with his nails to produce precise, clear and microtonal sounds and with the fleshy part of his fingers which produces a flat sound known as rui dhunna, which refers to the sound made when fluffing and cleaning cotton wool by hand. He takes keen interest in creating and spreading music for children. In the process of teaching music to his two sons, he has composed special songs for them and for children all over the country. His message is to spread love and affection among people. He has also composed a special ¦Birthday Songª for children. He has composed new ragas like Amiri Todi, HaripriyaKannada, Jawahar Manjari and Shivanjali for special occasions. He has founded the Hafiz Ali Khan Memorial Society to commemorate his father. It presents annual awards to outstanding musicians in recognition of their services to classical music. He has also trained some eminent sarod players like Gurdev Singh. Amjad Ali Khan has the distinction of being the first north Indian artist to have performed in honour of Tyagaraja at the saint-musicianªs Thiruvaiyar shrine. He was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1989.

Ustad Bismillah Khan
Quote:
Bismillah Khan is an outstanding and popular contemporary shehnai player. He has attained astonishing mastery over the instrument. He was born into a family of shehnai players and it was natural that he would train in the art of playing shenai. He was born in a small village called Dumraon in the Shahbad district of Bihar, on November 21, 1916. His early childhood was spent in Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganga, where his uncle was the official shehnai player in the famous Vishwanath temple. His elder brother was also a renowned shehnai player. His father, Paigamber Bax, was a musician for the Dumraon State. He started his training under the guidance of his maternal uncle, Ali Bax, at the age of six. He often accompanied him to perform at marriage celebrations or music conferences. Bismillah Khan made a recording for the first time in 1930,. However it was sold in the name of a relative, Vilayat Hussain, a more popular musician at the time! He made his first major public appearance in 1930 at the age of 14, when he played along with his uncle at the All India Music Conference in Allahabad. His second performance was at the Music Conference at the Lucknow Exhibition, where he won a gold medal for his recital. A jugalbandi of the shehnai and sitar performed by Bismillah Khan and Sitat Nawaz Abdul Halim Jaffar Khan, for the film Gunj Uthi Shehnai (The Shehnai Resounded), was a great success. Bismillah Khanªs has the ability to produce intricate sound patterns on the shehnai which, till before his time, were considered impossible on this instrument. He has been a source of inspiration to succeeding generations of shehnai players and has groomed many in this fine art. He was given the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1956,for his outstanding services in the field of music, and the title Shehnai Chakravarti by the National Cultural Organisation in 1955. The Government of India bestowed on him the title Padmashree in 1961, and later he was further honoured by the Padmabhushan and the Padmavibhushan.

Simply it is great. That is what I was waiting for. I can upload lots of music. But making a beautiful review about the great musicians and their creations is beyond of my capability. Very few people has this power. Isinpit is one of them. I envy u isinpit.
Really, I personally think that no music in the world can compare to the vastness, complexity, melody and the heights of the classical music from the Indian sub-continent. One has to be really exposed to it to appreciate the patience, diligence and years (20+) of hard work and "shadhona" it takes to becoming even just a semi-skilled performer of the great ragas. I was once told by my instructor back in Dhaka that it takes 10 years to master just the raag "Tori" in your voice. Just imagine! Thousands of rag raginis and taals! Not to mention the different regional sangeet and styles and all the gharanas. I just wish I could get the chance to learn shastrio shongeet now.
Shehnai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan died of cardiac arrest at the Heritage hospital in Varanasi(India) on Monday,August 21st 2006. The government of India on Monday declared a one-day national mourning in view of the death of this music genius. Uttar Pradesh government also declared a one-day mourning and ordered closure of all government schools, colleges and offices.
