Synopsis:
Antaheen is the story of Abhik (Rahul Bose) a promising police officer and Brinda (Radhika Apte) the livewire reporter of a news channel, who can relate to each oher through the internet, but cannot conjure up the same relationship when they meet. Its also the story of Moni Pishi, Abhik's single aunt, who chose her life but who once had a similar relationship with a man with whom she communicated over the telephone but never met. Its the story of a couple, Ranjan (Kalyan Roy) and Paromita (Aparna Sen), both wonderful people who desperately want each other but have drifted apart because of their own mental reservations. It is the story of Mr. & Mrs Mehra (shouvik Kundogrami & Mita Vashisht), who have all the power and everything money can buy and yet are desperately unhappy.
Antaheen shows us these and other facets of Kolkata through a series of intertwined vignettes, They are all connected and yet they are separate stories. In doing so it presents a collage of the life of upper middle-class Bengali Society of Kolkata.
Comments:
Behind its unending search for love and compatibility, Antaheen is a story of emotional attachments. Each protagonist in the story is seeking a companion - love if you like - and each has a need S/He cannot express. And yet, each individual is selfish, unwilling to commit to a relationship. There are beautiful gentle touches, like the scene when Mrs. Mehra is suffering from a hangover and ignores the presence of her husband. yet he calls the servant and sends her a pill. Paromita leaves Ranjan because she felt he had unfairly accused her of ignoring his father and gone off to a photographic expedition, but her own anxieties also come forth when we learn that she has never painted or taken up serious photography since. I also loved the little exchanges between Abhik and his assistant sabya - they are so naturally middle class Bengali. It is these deft touches that raises Antaheen to one of the best Bengali films to have surfaced in recent times.
There is poetry and art weaving through the film. From the Mexican pinter Frida kahlo's painting to the lyrics that seem to be an integral part of the film (songs & lyrics are by Biswadeep Chatterjee). Music by Santanu Moitra is surprisingly mellow and low key. The screenplay is taut and despite the listlessness of the theme, manages to keep your interest. Some fine editing by Arghyakamal Das also helps.
Two things stand out. The first is the Director's love for Kolkata and the second is the loving camerawork by Abhik Mukherjee that brings it out. I have never seen Kolkata look so beautiful on celluloid and the scene where Brinda and her maother stand on a balcony and watch the town below them in awe, simply reflects the viewers sentiments.
The Director's efforts are complemented by some brilliant acting. Radhika Apte is superb in her debut film as is Kalyan Roy. Aparna is great too and Sharmila looks so graceful that she could be everybody's favourite "Moni Pishi".
If there is one thing that I dislike about this film, its the unending commercials that ar part of the film. It almost makes you feel that you are watching a TV serial but without the advantage of being able to skip channels when the advertisements appear.
Uploader's Notes:
A preview copy of this DVD has been uploaded in Banglatorrents earlier. This is a full DVD rip. I'm uploading this for the quality conscious and also because the preview copies are usually not as good as the final DVD.
The rip quality is upto the usual DDR standards. The discerning will like the way in which details have been preseved/enhanced (check the close-ups). The images are slightly softer in the DivX vesion (1400 MB) and, this is purely subjective, but more pleasing to my eye. I ave preserved the 5.1 channel surround sound in both versions while re-encoding audio.
