Rtv, the country’s fourth private satellite television channel, formally goes on air from December 26.
‘Rtv will go on air from December 26,’ the chairman and managing director of the television channel, Mosaddak Ali, announced at a press conference on Saturday.
The president, Iajuddin Ahmed, is expected to inaugurate the formal broadcasting at the Bangladesh China Friendship Conference Centre at 6:30pm on the day.
The channel will go for experimental broadcasting form December 1 and will air programmes for 24 hours from the very first day of its
formal journey, Mosaddak, also a lawmaker of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, said.
Mosaddak, also the chairman of another satellite channel, ntv, expressed his confident that Rtv would be able to satisfy the viewers with its good quality picture, and impartial news and views.
‘We are determined to maintain objectivity and impartiality in news presentation,’ he said and added that the new channel would also broadcast talk show and entertainment programmes considering the tastes variation of viewers of all ages and classes.
Avoiding direct reply to a question, whether he had
got the licence on political consideration, Mosaddak said, ‘I have applied for the licence in 2002 and the government granted it.’
Rtv directors Enayetur Rahim, Lutfar Rahman and Mejbahuddin Ahmed were, among others, present at the press briefing.
Bangladesh has currently four television channels — state owned terrestrial and satellite channel Bangladesh Television and private satellite channels ntv, ATN Bangla and Channel I.

thanx for sharing the newz chomok. I also heard about this but didnt know they r launching this dec. Here's another inside newz ... Bangladesh Gov has approved to license more private channels. I already know two channel name, but not sure if its gonna be the final name. One is Boishakhi TV, the owner of Bengal Group of Industries is launching it. And another one is Prime TV, the same organisation as Prime Bank, Insurance, University. These channels did not get their license yet, but looks like they'll launch sometime in 2006. Plz everyone pray tht their tender passes (though it takes a lot more to pass a tender in BD :) ) both of them. It would mean a lot to me.

i really wonder how these TV channels cover their expenses..bangladesh advertise market is very limited and BTV itself enjoys almost 80% of it.so all these 4/5 channels are surviving with the rest 20% market and license fee from cable operators.

But I guess nTV takes a looot more money to show an advertisement than BTV. Just think about all the grameen, Aktel and Banglalink ads. And since ppl dont watch BTV nemore private channels are the best place to communicate wth ppl. But there must be other sources of income coz it costs a lot to launch a 24hr channel let alone maintaining it.

no no brainwalker.the advertisement cost and profit BTV makes is far more than any private channels (BTV-80%,Rest-20%).

see,the market of most of the products (other than mobile,newspaper and few others) in urban areas (where cable TV is availble) is nothing compare to that in rural area (where no cable).so they always prefer BTV to any other channels.

there is just one more source of income which is license charge from the viewers.still it should be difficult to cover all the expenses!!

hmmmm tht's interesting ... but there must be a really good source of income tht I dont know of, why would so many companies even apply for license if its not a good business ? I'll try to get more info about the income source.

This isjust a back up of NTV! Incase NTV goes down as govt changes. Ekushe TV also doing their ground work to come back live! There are many other TV channels on the table waiting for govt. approval. So it seems, we may see couple other TV channels coming up including a University TV channel & Ekushey TV.

I think in a way it's good. As many people are looking for the job. This is one kind way to provide job to the people and this will minimize our unemployment (BAKARrotto).

they don't necessarily have high production costs like BTV used to have because they don't produce their own material. They buy the natoks as packages. BTV in the old days had to have the studios, all of the technical hands on their payroll even while they weren't doing something, all of the production equipment, etc.
These channels just buy a show that has been created offsite by someone else (this lowers production cost and increases net revenue from advertising).

Someone should open up a sports channel in BD.

yep BT is best channel, we dont have to watch ne ads here !!! Just pure entertainment and the best part is viewers are releasers :D

After reading this thread, I actually took time to watch one of the channels. It may be true that the amount of firm advertising in Public tv is greater but the quantity of the advertisement in private channel outnumbers BTV. In a 30 minutes timeslot in private channel, real time of a particular natok/film is around 13 to 16 minutes, rest is advertisement. If you give in 2 hours to these channels, you will get less then one hour of programs and rest in advertisement.

Hospital (forgot the name)
Other cell phone companies and many others I cant remember right now.

Also, you may not know that unlike BTV, you can actually buy timeslot to broadcast your own program. Some of the programs we see are actually paid programs and commercial times are included of your choice with restriction. It means you can choose your own program and commercials to be show, ofcourse if you have the money for it. Just pay them for the 30 minutes or hour slot.

NTV charges as much as 45000 in Taka for advertisement. Check their website for more rates. Also, they also have long term (permanent) sponsors and contracts with companies supporting financially. Not to mention they are being broadcasted worldwide.
