There was also a serial featuring Rajit Kapoor as byomkesh bakshi in hindi. It was good. sarey 74.. hmm may be I'll download it from here. and let u know whether I liked it or not btw, I watched Ashoni Sanket, and it didnt changed my opinion about Waheeda Rehman as the most beautiful actress in Ray movie . However, the movie is good. But in this movie Ray is not experimenting with form and technique. The symbolism is terse (very definitive of Ray). :claps: | 03-13-2006, 12:35 AM | | BT Expert | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Bangladesh Posts: 2,749 Thanks: 879 Thanked 9,305 Times in 433 Posts Rep Power: 157 UL: 379.49 gb DL: 97.62 gb Ratio: 3.89 | | | Please get the movie preview of "Shathi" by Haronath Chakrobarty ( Jeet & Priyanka) . It's such a bad movie (from my point of view); that I will think twice before watching any uttam kumar movie again. This I'm not writing to discourage others. The basic premise of the movie is still palateable, the treatment in terms of screenplay and acting is pathetic. I wouldnt disclose the story as there is an element of suspense in it. The surprise considering the fact that the movie is made in 60s-70s is commendable. One of the funny instance in the movie : The director in an attempt to replicate the court scene akin to hollywood films showed a panel of jury sitting in the court. I never knew India had such legal system. | 04-05-2006, 07:35 AM | | Luminous | | Join Date: Jul 2005 Posts: 126 Thanks: 13 Thanked 0 Times in 0 Posts Rep Power: 22 UL: 66.17 gb DL: 17.83 gb Ratio: 3.71 | | | Since I have not watched any bengali movie recently, I'll update this thread with a movie I watched long time back. Patently aware that Nita has received her monthly salary, her talented, but indolent older brother Shankar (Anil Chatterjee) pays an unexpected visit, and encountering Nita absorbed in reading a personal letter from a suitor named Sanat (Niranjan Ray), playfully snatches the note and reads aloud its affectionate contents, before asking her for spending money. Meanwhile her younger sister, Gita (Gita Ghatak) and brother Mantu (Dwiju Bhawal) brazenly plead with their desperate and resourceless mother (Gita De) for new articles of clothing, before re-directing their vain and selfish entreaties to Nita. Having spent her entire salary on her burdensome, coddled siblings, her embittered and insecure mother then vociferously complains to her father (Bijon Bhattacharya), an underemployed school teacher, that Nita has squandered the monthly household budget. Bound by a selfless sense of familial duty, Nita has decided to postpone her marriage to Sanat until Shankar realizes his ambition to become a classical singer. However, as Nita perseveres in her sacrifice for her ungrateful and demanding family, her own prospects for happiness proves ever increasingly bleak. Critical Analysis from a Film Journal Ritwik Ghatak presents a visually sublime, idiosyncratically overripe, but provocative and deeply personal account of poverty, disillusionment, and exile in The Cloud-Capped Star. By interplaying light and shadows and incorporating evocative, aggressive sounds that underscore emotional impact and comedic tone, Ghatak creates a unique, sensorial experience that chronicles the systematic demoralization of the human soul: the surreal, foreboding shot of Nita descending a staircase after she is compelled to leave her studies in order to support the family; the overemphasized sounds of cooking as the mother spies on Nita and Sanat that aurally conveys her anger and fear at losing their primary source of income; the contrasted image of Nita - first, illuminated in front of a latticed window as she reads Sanat's letter and later, concealed behind the window after Shankar's return; the sound of lashing as Nita and Shankar sing a melancholic Rabindranath Tagore song (evoking Raskolnikov's dream on burden and responsibility in Fyodor Doestoevsky's Crime and Punishment). An allegory for the traumatic consequences of the partition of Bengal, The Cloud-Capped Star captures the disintegration of a Bengali middle class family as a result of dislocation, poverty, self-interest, and petty, internal division. Note the repeated imagery of a passing train bisecting the horizon that alludes to the physical division of the family's ancestral homeland. Inevitably, as Nita attempts to recuperate from the ravages of self-denial, want, and exploitation, her cry of anguish becomes an indistinguishable, resonant echo from the lost and irredeemable soul of a displaced and uprooted people. The movie though flawed at certain places (becomes overtly critical and b/w) is one of the best from India. Anil Chatterjee as a talented elder brother ranks top among the actors. The flaws are the result of the over indulgence of Ghatak. Given his personal history, it is important to judge the movie vis-a-vis his own hunger for intelligentsia/intellectualism and angst ridded poverty days. The movie has some beautiful imagery supplemented with gritty symbolic realities. | 04-05-2006, 02:17 PM | | BT Expert | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Bangladesh Posts: 2,749 Thanks: 879 Thanked 9,305 Times in 433 Posts Rep Power: 157 UL: 379.49 gb DL: 97.62 gb Ratio: 3.89 | | | What would be next ? He lives alone, thanks to his philandering ways, in a large plot of land in the middle of Calcutta. In the dilapidated home, he has kept his teacher's daughter, played by Deboshree, who had differences with her famous painter husband (also because of his philandering ways). The film revolves around their relationship. But the crux of the story is not philander hidden behind artistic creativity cloak, rather an unstated budding relation between Soumitra and Deboshree with all its pitfalls and dire consequences. | 04-25-2006, 04:39 PM | | Luminous | | Join Date: Jul 2005 Posts: 126 Thanks: 13 Thanked 0 Times in 0 Posts Rep Power: 22 UL: 66.17 gb DL: 17.83 gb Ratio: 3.71 | | | My Views Though, I consider PAAR by Gautam Ghose his best, this movie is still watchable compared to his recent movie "Abar Aranye", which according to me unwatchable. The movie has its implicit flaws inherent in any Ghose's movie - Lack of subtlity or symbolism substituted by a melodramatic presentation, excessive self-gratification (pseudo-intellectualism), a simplistic communism answer to all the malaise in the world :banghead:. But the mentioned drawbacks are considerably less compared to Abar Aranye (where the excessive Che Guevarra irked me), thanks to a modulated performance by Deboshree and Soumitra, in that order. Gautam Ghose is a better cameraman than a director. His limitations are result of his qualified philosophical outlook compared to his contemporary "Buddhadeb", whom I regard at par with Satyajit Ray and Adoor. The film could be cut short with some unecessary melodrama. The meditation on loneliness is inadequate and uncooked. One of the beautiful relationship that could have been explored was promoter's role played by Biplab and Soumitra, but sidelined in favor of some dramatization. But I would still say that the movie is watchable and much better than AntarMahal. | 05-02-2006, 03:19 AM | | Erudite | | Join Date: Aug 2005 Posts: 181 Thanks: 54 Thanked 13 Times in 5 Posts Rep Power: 23 UL: 148.63 gb DL: 63.21 gb Ratio: 2.35 | | Quote: | Originally Posted by analyze sarey74 amar mone nei... aami uttam kumar movie khub kom dekhechi because aamar bondhu ra je movie gulo bhalo bolto like saptapadi :hiding:  and few others, I didnt liked them at all... To be frank, I believe that I have watched 95% Styajit Ray movies(the only one missing is chiriyakhana which according to Mr. Ray was his most disliked creation. I can give you the reason later). watched around 50% Ghatak movie and have all of them in my kitty, though not a big fan of Mrinal Sen but watched 30% of his movies and last I probably watched 60% of Tapan Sinha's creation. Other notable old directors are Ajay Ghosh and Asit Sen. Among new directors, love to watch Aparna Sen, Rituporno Ghosh, Goutam Ghosh (to some extent), Buddhadev Dasgupta (again to a limited extent) and some others. Anyway, just to add a small comment here to Rihaad: Have you really watched both the movie: Chandni Bar and Mondo Meyer Upakhyan!!! If so, then I believe that you will see the difference. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | All times are GMT +6.
