The River (1951): Jean Renoir

This 1951 film of one of the greatest directors of all time, was shot in Bengal and is about a young girl growing up in India/Bangladesh. Some have called it a generous film, others think it is an all-time great film. The story and screenplay is by Rumer Godden.

Satyajit Ray worked as an Assistant to Jean Renoir in this film. It was the major inspiration in his early films. Bansi Chandragupta was the art director.

I have an excellent copy of this film (700MB/outstanding quality). I can upload it if there is a demand.

The film is originally in French, but this copy is dubbed in English

Would the moderators advise me if I can release the film in this forum?

Thanks for asking before you release. Everything is right about the movie apart from the language. Original language in French and english Dubbed. However according to the guideline about the Hindi/other language release is we always ask not to release non-bangla stuff unless exception. Once again for the members, what we allow is

Thanks. I ask whenever I have a doubt.

It is a pity, because few would have seen this film and it is a beautiful piece of cinema. You can see the influence of Renoir's lyrical style in the Apu trilogy that came later. This film, through Ray and Ritwik has influnced Bengali Cinama for 50 years!

But Rules are Rules and they are made with a good purpose.

I doubt that the rules are that rigid here, at least not in my view. There have been english language movies released here before (36 Chowrongi lane by Aparna Sen). I believe the subject matter/plot should be centered around bengal/bengali. I can understand that problem may arise from deviating too much from the language as that will in turn open up room for abuse.

This movie is one of my favorite ever..! Although the Director is French, the shooting is all done on the Brahmaputra. The spirit is a blend of Western and Indian cultures.

Well we have the poll results!
199 views, only 11 responses, 9 for/one against/one abstaining.

Since there are 15733 members and 1144 peers (active members) the sample size is just 0.07% of all members and 0.96% of active members. Not a statistically significant sample.

Any advice on how to proceed?

of course this is a classic and can really show how ray's work had aqn inspiration from earlier Renoir's works. It should definitely be allowed

I can't seed it any more as it has been deleted from my hard disk. I have a backup copy and I can re-upload if you like. But that will mean you will have to re-download afresh.
