Some have called it a generous film, others think it is an all-time great film. The story and screenplay is by Rumer Godden. Satyajit Ray worked as an Assistant to Jean Renoir in this film. It was the major inspiration in his early films. Bansi Chandragupta was the art director. I have an excellent copy of this film (700MB/outstanding quality). I can upload it if there is a demand. The film is originally in French, but this copy is dubbed in English Would the moderators advise me if I can release the film in this forum? | 03-12-2007, 10:00 PM | | Moderator | | Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Chatham, Kent, UK Posts: 1,068 Thanks: 2,186 Thanked 4,296 Times in 180 Posts Rep Power: 81 UL: 314.75 gb DL: 24.00 gb Ratio: 13.11 | | | Re: The River (1951): Jean Renoir Thanks for asking before you release. Everything is right about the movie apart from the language. Original language in French and english Dubbed. However according to the guideline about the Hindi/other language release is we always ask not to release non-bangla stuff unless exception. Once again for the members, what we allow is Quote: | Originally Posted by BanglaGuru Lets make sure anything that relates to bangla or bengali or bangladesh should get a place here nothin else. for ex. a hindi movie made by santajit rai can't get in anywhere on BT. on the other hand a bengali movie made by any hindi director or anyone else shouldn't have any question to get a place | I think it should be clear by now what we allow and what we dont. I ask whenever I have a doubt. It is a pity, because few would have seen this film and it is a beautiful piece of cinema. You can see the influence of Renoir's lyrical style in the Apu trilogy that came later. This film, through Ray and Ritwik has influnced Bengali Cinama for 50 years! But Rules are Rules and they are made with a good purpose. | 03-13-2007, 12:26 AM | | Privileged Member $Donor! | | Join Date: May 2006 Posts: 251 Thanks: 779 Thanked 359 Times in 17 Posts Rep Power: 27 UL: 272.44 gb DL: 176.39 gb Ratio: 1.54 | | | Re: The River (1951): Jean Renoir Quote: Originally Posted by Debpk77 ^^^ Thanks. There have been english language movies released here before (36 Chowrongi lane by Aparna Sen). I believe the subject matter/plot should be centered around bengal/bengali. I can understand that problem may arise from deviating too much from the language as that will in turn open up room for abuse. | 03-13-2007, 10:07 AM | | | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Posts: 289 Thanks: 49 Thanked 1,093 Times in 61 Posts Rep Power: 29 UL: 612.35 gb DL: 19.50 gb Ratio: 31.40 | | | Re: The River (1951): Jean Renoir Quote: Originally Posted by Pandit I doubt that the rules are that rigid here, at least not in my view. Although the Director is French, the shooting is all done on the Brahmaputra. The spirit is a blend of Western and Indian cultures. I have an active upload of this movie, and will gladly indicate the link for those interested, given it can not be uploaded here. Please pm if interested. | 03-14-2007, 03:41 PM | | Moderator | | Join Date: Jan 2006 Posts: 553 Thanks: 691 Thanked 10,039 Times in 251 Posts Rep Power: 128 UL: 435.35 gb DL: 13.66 gb Ratio: 31.87 | | | Re: The River (1951): Jean Renoir I think we should allow this, but don't know about others | 03-17-2007, 05:43 AM | | Erudite | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Toronto, Canada Posts: 160 Thanks: 99 Thanked 261 Times in 18 Posts Rep Power: 25 UL: 85.00 gb DL: 64.31 gb Ratio: 1.32 | | | Re: The River (1951): Jean Renoir It should be allowed, in my opinion. __________________ ---> ---> ---> | 03-22-2007, 03:25 PM | | | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Posts: 289 Thanks: 49 Thanked 1,093 Times in 61 Posts Rep Power: 29 UL: 612.35 gb DL: 19.50 gb Ratio: 31.40 | | | Re: The River (1951): Jean Renoir Well we have the poll results! 199 views, only 11 responses, 9 for/one against/one abstaining. Since there are 15733 members and 1144 peers (active members) the sample size is just 0.07% of all members and 0.96% of active members. Not a statistically significant sample.
